Are We Still Following Rules?

I think everyone has moved away from the rule of “no white after Labor Day”. Growing up, my mom was a stickler for the rule of no white after Labor Day. And, I couldn’t have been more excited when she said it was time to put away those white, patent leather shoes until next spring. I honestly hated the idea of white so I always hoped Labor Day would come sooner, like right after Easter. Each year my white shoes got smaller even if my feet never got bigger. I despised the idea of wearing white, especially white patent leather shoes.

I was in my mid-thirties before I started purchasing white items for myself. Before that time, if I needed something white, I am not ashamed to say I had to borrow the item because I was sure not to have it in a color as boring as white. I started off with a white blouse, then white slacks and eventually graduated to a white dress. And believe it or not, I only wear these pieces during the fall or winter. Breaking all my mama’s wardrobe rules…

While I’m not at the point of saying I love white, I have a better appreciation of the color. When kept clean, white makes you look fresh and crisp no matter what time of the year. White pieces have become a wardrobe staple that can elevate your style in any season. It can breathe new life into any wardrobe.
