Dress the Part

20180121_201838

While I believe in dressing comfortably for work, I also believe in being neat and presentable. I loathe the idea of people coming to work dressed in leggings, jeggings or jeans on a daily basis. As an educator, I feel our profession is constantly disrespected and the way we present ourselves play a great part in that. Many educators whine that it costs too much to “dress the part” but, I beg to differ. Besides, I find it necessary for us to dress in appropriate attire because it sends a visual image that we are professionals even in a school setting.

Though I love leggings and jeans, I realize there is a time and a place for everything. There are young ladies that are influenced daily by things I do and say as well as the clothing I wear. It is imperative they understand when they become adults and walk into a place of business as an employee, they should present themselves in a manner that makes them look like a professional without question.

I believe the way people dress plays a big part in the way they are approached. Oftentimes, I hear people saying others take them as a joke or they don’t get the respect they deserve. And I’m not afraid to say, “Look at your presentation.” If you know you are meeting a parent for the first time, why would you show up in tennis shoes? Would you show up for your first date at a restaurant in tennis shows? We always say, “First impressions are last impressions.” but dress like we have the opportunity for three strikes.

Dressing for my profession is something I am adamant about. I grew up in an era where female teachers wore dresses and stockings to work on a daily basis. The respect started with the fact that they looked like they deserved to be respected. While people don’t believe it carries a lot of weight, dressing well sets you apart from others before you even speak. It says you have pride in yourself and what you do. And when people know you care about yourself, they are likely to believe you can care about them as well. In the words of Tom Ford, “Dressing well is a form of good manners.” So please mind your manners.

Bimini, The Bahamas

During the winter break I had the privilege of visiting Bimini, The Bahamas. It was a delight to leave the cold, brutal weather for a few days to bask in the sun.

Bimini is the smallest Bahamian island and covers approximately seven miles. Our modes of transportation throughout the trip were quite engaging at all times. We took a two hour ferry ride from Miami to the island where a shuttle was waiting to take us to our resort, Resorts World Bimini. Because of the size of the island, we were able to walk to most places and opted for a golf cart to get a full tour of the seven mile span that is Bimini. We opted for a small plane to return and the flight was approximately 20 minutes. Because we met and made “friends” on the ferry, each ride was an adventure as we came in constant contact with our new acquaintances.

While in Bimini, we spent most of our time “inside the gates”. We were able to enjoy the beautiful blue waters on the private beach, the casino, the pool on the fifth floor overlooking the beach, the restaurants and the full scenery of what constitutes #biminibliss.

Outside the gates, we were able to explore and interact with the residents of Bimini/Alice Town. One of the coolest things was riding down the streets and waving to EVERYBODY. We visited beaches outside the gates, found the bread house, ate fresh seafood from the beach, drank from coconuts and fellowshiped some more with our “friends” from the ferry.

Bimini was a very nice and pleasant getaway. It was very relaxing and exciting at the same time. Such a joy to have the opportunity to enjoy good eats, blue skies and even bluer waters and to sit and watch one of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen.

New Year, Better Me!

DSCF6521-01

For years, I’ve watched people make New Year’s resolutions and set goals for the start of a brand new year. I have watched the campaign and seen the slogan “new year, new me” more times than I can count. This phrase is so popular, it has been used to advertise almost any product that guarantees a transformation. A week into the new year and many people are still riding the high of their new year, new me ambitions. Me on the other hand, I’m still riding the waves of everything I gained last year. And while I am not focused on a “new me”, I have spent countless hours reflecting on my growth, lessons learned and increasing my development for a better me. 2017 brought me lots of peace and contentment from learning how to deal with and execute these five things:

  1. Exercising my power/strength – Last year, I prayed fervently for strength beyond my beliefs. While I’ve always cautioned myself about what I pray for, I wanted to grow physically, emotionally and spiritually. I needed God to show me I was stronger than what I perceived myself to be and he gave me exactly what I asked for. Death visited my family so much in 2017 that at one point it appeared we were immune to the idea of it. Sometimes, I had to be the comforter and often times I was being comforted. But each day, after presented with a different mountain, God gave me the strength to not only climb the mountain, but also give it the appeal of an easy task to those on the outside looking in. I remember receiving a text that read, “I’m thinking about you. I admire your strength and perseverance to strive forward. Keep your head up!” This indicated to me that people were truly watching how I handle my battles and I had an opportunity to show them how awesome my God is. He truly taught me how to move mountains.
  2. Saying “no” without explanation – Although I don’t consider myself a “people pleaser”, I have definitely tried to meet the demands of my loved ones. When I couldn’t do what I was asked to do, I always felt the need to explain why I couldn’t do it. Long gone are those days. 2017 gave me the understanding that, “No” is a complete sentence and I don’t have to follow-up with any type of justification. If I didn’t feel like doing something, I simply didn’t do it. End of story!
  3. Understanding the importance of my time – I always felt if people thought enough of me to invite me to their event, I should feel privileged about the opportunity to attend. However, I started finding myself tired, frustrated and drained trying to appear at multiple functions throughout the weekend. Then I started getting last-minute invitations and this would throw my entire agenda off trying to fit the activities of others into my already brimming schedule. And one day I decided, I was going to miss a function and rest. It was refreshing to stay at home, relax and take naps throughout the day. And from that day forward, I started prioritizing events and other people’s consideration of my time. If I did not receive at least a three-day notice, I was not attending. If I felt I was being invited to fluff party numbers, I was not attending. If I was only being imvited because I give the “good gifts”, I definitely wasn’t attending. Making time for me again was reinvigorating!
  4. Disconnecting from people who emptied my cup – Whew! Enough said. I’ve tried to maintain friendships or some sort of relationship with people simply because we have history. I found myself around people that weren’t as committed to our relationship as I was or some that never wanted to be held accountable for their actions. And so, I let go. I refused to let people empty me that wouldn’t take the opportunity to refuel me when needed. People that never offered an encouraging word, people that always called when they needed something but never called to see if I was in need, people that never asked the simple question, “How are you?”, etc. were all dismissed without hesitation or explanation.
  5. Connecting with people whom I could serve – I consider myself to have a very strong support system and whenever it appeared I could count myself out, someone was there to pick up the pieces. From needing a babysitter for my son to having dinner on the table, I never had to worry about my needs being met. Whether it was family, friends or colleagues picking up the pieces, my family was always taken care of. In 2017, I met a few young ladies that were sweet as pie but unfortunately shared some of the same struggles I had in previous years. Without hesitation, I stepped in and helped serve a need. It has been a blessing to give to others and pay forward all the good deeds that were done for me.

Last year I learned to let go of the past and free myself of failures and disappointments. I lost a lot but I gained so much more. I embraced a new perspective and stood firm in the declaration that it was my year, and now I am more than ready to build on my foundation.

Biltmore Estate, America’s Largest Home

DSCF3609_1

A few years ago, my family had the privilege of experiencing Biltmore, located in Asheville, NC. Approximately three months before we were scheduled to leave for Biltmore, I started visiting the website weekly, trying to fathom all that this escapade could entail. By the time we started packing for our trip, I felt I knew everything there was to know when visiting Biltmore. However, once we entered the estate, I realized nothing could have prepared me for this trek. The Biltmore Estate sits on 8,000 acres, has a magnificent view of multiple gardens and the mountains, numerous shops, concerts on the lawn, hotels on the property, an area for the Land Rover experience, horseback riding, bike riding, a museum and a winery.

Based on my visits to the website, I predetermined a two day visit was in order. The first day was devoted to exploring the property and visiting the gardens. We walked for hours just taking in the grandeur of the gardens while taking tons of pictures. On day two, we started with the house tour. I opted for the audio guided tour of the house while the rest of the family did the self-guided tour. The house consisted of 250 rooms which included an indoor swimming pool, bowling alley, the most admirable dining room ever and a rooftop with a splendid view of the mountains. It took us approximately three hours to complete the house tour. The impressiveness of the house could not be put into words. We rounded the day off with the wine tour, wine tasting, a trip to the gift shop, the Biltmore museum and continuous strolling of the trails while taking in the sights.

The Biltmore was truly one for the books. It is my desire to one day return during the holiday season and enjoy “Christmas at Biltmore”.

Niagara Falls

“I love the sounds and the power of water, whether it is the waves or a waterfall.”

Having never learned to swim, I usually shy away from water. When presented with opportunities to participate in water activities I always opt out, unless I’m standing in the face of my son trying to give him the courage to do something that deep down inside I’m afraid to do myself. Now, I love the sound of streaming water, as long as I can hear it from a distance. But sometimes God’s beauty pulls me in and He allows me to embrace His offering while gently relieving me of my sense of trepidation.

Niagara Falls gave me that experience, that calm. The views were, as a friend of mine described it, majestic. Having an opportunity to experience Niagara Falls from both the Canadian side and the U.S. side, one might debate which offers a better view of “The Falls”. But, what can’t be argued is the magnificence and the power of the gifts of nature.

While touring Niagara Falls, Ontario, we first opted to walk and take in the essence of what The Falls offered. The Canadian side allowed for a more panoramic view of both the American Falls and  the Horseshoe Falls. After our brief stint of walking, we decided to take a ride on The Hornblower. This was a boat tour of The Falls that definitely allowed us to get up close and feel the gentle wraths of The Falls. After our boat tour, we walked over to Clifton Hills, which I kept referring to as “The Boardwalk.” Clifton Hills contained a number of restaurants, gift shops, arcades, rides and the opportunity to be in the midst of other tourists, and a lot of them I might add. During the evening we walked back over to The Falls to see them light up during the night. A picture couldn’t capture the total elegance and exquisiteness of The Falls in that moment.

Niagara Falls, NY…OH MY GOD!!! The views from the Canadian and U.S. sides were different but equally pleasing. The distinction between the two was the quiet. Although crowded, the U.S. side was not as busy. Most people were sitting enjoying the serenity even in the midst of thousands. On the U.S. side, we walked multiple trails and visited the park. We were able to stand over The Falls, walk under The Falls, and walk alongside The Falls. We were also able to get up close and personal views of all three waterfalls, the Horseshoe Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and the American Falls. Since we participated in the boat ride on the Canadian side, we decided on the Cave of the Winds this time, which is a walking tour of The Falls. Other than the word majestic, exhilarating is the only other word I can use to describe this experience. In the midst of my fears, I found a new happiness. Not only was I not afraid to walk through the waterfalls, I would walk away and run back into the feeling of pounding water against me. That moment was more magical than Disney!

I’m not going to say I enjoyed one side of Niagara Falls versus the other. What I will say is they offered different perspectives of one of the greatest creations. I am ecstatic for the opportunities this experience provided. It allowed me to face my fears and more importantly recognize and appreciate even more, the beauty of God’s work.

The Wolverine State

20170806_191032

Two weeks ago the family took off for our annual vacation. My husband warned us there would be several stops, some brief and some lengthy.  The focal point of our trip was Michigan, where my son was scheduled to compete in the Junior Olympic’s National Track Meet. Based on this, we knew we would spend the bulk of our time at Eastern Michigan University where the track meet was being held.

Although we spent 10 hour days at the stadium, we still found breaks in the schedule to move around the state. We toured The University of Michigan, which was so extensive, we found ourselves circling the athletic facilities multiple times before having to ask for directions to the other parts of the university. The university extended for blocks and required us to drive around the college grounds versus walking as we usually do on campus tours. Visiting the university on a Friday night was amusing. Needless to say, we saw some very lively and entertaining people in Ann Arbor.

Prior to leaving our home, we agreed we had to take a tour of Motown. Arriving at Hitsville, I looked at the building and stated, “Berry Gordy made a a lot of people famous in that little bitty house!” Even after seeing The Temptations, I was shocked by the size of the building. We completed the tour of the Hitsville Museum and the only downside of the expedition was that no photography or recording was allowed inside the museum. Our guide was one of a kind with an amazing voice that echoed through the halls. The museum still held many original items such as the vending machine, time cards, flooring and instruments that were used by the band. There was also memorabilia on display that had been donated by some of Motown’s greatest artists. The tour gave me a whole new perspective and appreciation of the movie The Temptations, the artists of Motown, and the hits that were produced on the label.

Although Michigan was one of our extended stays, we spent most of our time supporting the kids that advanced to one of the biggest meets of the year. I had the chance to laugh with the kids, meet new coaches and share in the experiences with the athletes. I was truly grateful to see the love, support and respect the athletes had for each other, and to witness so many talented individuals perform at such a high-level. Although this part of the vacation was atypical for us, the memories we created with the kids will last a lifetime.

Networking with Poshmark

FB_IMG_1501159919735[1]

Last week, I was presented with the opportunity to attend a Poshmark networking event. I met a lot of fun people, had a couple glasses of “lemonade”, and gained a ton of followers that night. I viewed the written goals and gains of many women in the room and I realized Poshmark is helping dreams come true.

I joined Poshmark approximately one year ago as a courtesy to a friend. For the first six months after creating an account, I never opened the app. While cleaning out closets during the fall, I finally took a look at this Poshmark “thingy”. The first page I viewed was my girlfriend’s page to see what she was selling. When I realized she was selling her kid’s used clothes, I became overjoyed. I thought, “If I can offer for sale my son’s used clothes, I can make some things happen!!!” And from there, my online resale shop began and I took the time to learn how to make Poshmark work in my favor.

I’ve been an ACTIVE seller on Poshmark for approximately seven months. I have sold many of our used goods for pennies; but excellent customer service, great reviews and five stars from customers have attracted more buyers and viewers of my closet. Having no true desire to ever work a part time job, Poshmark has afforded me an opportunity to bring in a monthly stipend from my home.

During the Poshnation networking event, I had the chance to hear how Poshers have made selling on Poshmark their full time job . There were women that incorporated their Poshmark selling into their full time businesses. I met several young ladies that paid for family vacations using Poshmark. One vacation was a $10,000 trip for the family to Disney. And, I couldn’t begin to keep up with the number of women that paid for weddings using their Poshmark earnings. Poshmark has definitely been a favorable option for supplemental earnings for my family. And I would highly encourage anyone with quality, used goods looking to earn a few extra dollars to consider this online resource. Happy Poshing!

Happiness is a Choice

“Folks are usually about as happy as they make their minds up to be.” Abraham Lincoln

DSCF5788

Growing up, I think we all heard the phrase “Happiness is a choice.” While we might have agreed with that statement, we were never taught happiness comes from within, so we spent most of our younger years looking for this “happiness” guy. We tried to find dude in friendships. We probably looked for him/her during recess every time we tried to play with the cool kids. Some even looked for him/her in their lunch kit, when they opted to give their favorite snack to their lunch partner. From the beginning, most people sought this feeling from other individuals.

For me, as I got older, validation became my new happy. It didn’t matter if the affirmation was coming from peers, adults or even younger kids that watched me do something great (in their eyes). Whether it was a compliment about my shoelaces being tied to perfection, being an awesome athlete or a highly intelligent student, every compliment received gave me pleasure. Unfortunately, my survival started to depend on someone else’s approval of me. And this led to a straight path to me becoming my worst enemy. I was very critical of myself, always looking for flaws to perfect, seeking the greatness in me…to show it off to others. My “happiness”…

During college, I met two of the most awkward but inspiring young ladies when we became roommates. One day, they came up with the genius idea to make a T-Chart and list all of our positive qualities on one side and our negative elements on the other side. The catch was, your positive characteristics had to outweigh your negative traits. We spent all day trying to complete this task. This opened our eyes to how badly we condemn ourselves. We ended this activity by sharing our lists and adding our very own positive thoughts to each person’s list.

Twenty two years later, I start every single year completing this task. I start my list off with physical distinctions because I think when you look good, you feel good. And when you feel good, you accomplish more. I am continuously learning things that are favorable about me. I have accepted that I am designed differently and that in itself has brought self satisfaction. Twenty two years ago, I found out my happiness had been stored away in the back of my mind. I had to bring “him” to fruition by changing my thoughts and feelings about myself. People often question how and why I do so many things alone. And my response is, “I am not alone. I am content and at peace with my “happiness.”

Fredericksburg, TX.

DSCF6256[1]

Due to a delayed vacation this year, the family decided on an impromptu getaway. We agreed it needed to be brief but adventurous, and it had to get us through the days until we were scheduled to leave for our official vacation. After a five minute conversation, we decided we were going to take our talents to the small town of Fredericksburg, TX.

After arriving and taking a quick tour of the city, we ventured to Enchanted Rock. We decided to take Summit Trail, which would lead us to the pinnacle. Upon starting the trail, we realized it was a steep incline; no twists, no turns, we were headed straight up. I immediately paused to mentally prepare myself for the course. When I stopped my son blurted out, “And look, mom is falling behind already!” Yes, I fell behind. Yes, I stopped and sat on every rock I had to climb over. And yes, I even stopped and talked to people that were sitting just so I could take another break. But, eventually, I made it to the top! The view from the peak was magnificent and it was cooler at the top. We spent quite a bit of time relaxing, laughing, snapping pictures and taking in the scenery from the summit of Enchanted Rock.

Of course a hike of that magnitude called for a meal afterwards. We walked around looking for local eateries and found Mamacita’s, a great Tex-Mex place. The customer service was stupendous. The employees responded to every customer as if they were at a five star restaurant. Not to mention, the food was very fresh and fulfilling. After devouring great food and having a spritzer that was much appreciated, sleep was the only thing left to do. Oh, and watch the Fourth of July fireworks display that was put on for the town of Fredericksburg.

The next day we traveled downtown and this is where things became quite interesting. Fredericksburg is popular for its vineyards, so in passing through the small town you can’t help but notice the streets are littered with vineyards, wineries and opportunities for wine tours. Walking downtown, it’s safe to say we spied wineries, wineries and more wineries. Every other shop offered wine and beer tasting and afforded you the opportunity to grab a drink to go. I asked my husband, “So, if we stop in every shop, are we still tasting or are we drinking at that point?” We perused the downtown shops until the shade ran out and then we determined it was time to go, but not before purchasing wine.

This quick, overnight getaway, offered a serene setting free of the hustle and bustle of city life. The town is considered a retirement community, so although a great deal of people were visible at all times, everyone seemed tranquil. In our quick getaway we managed to get quality exercise, excellent dining experiences, superior wine selections and a peaceful visit.
