Distressed Denim

“Silence is an ornament for women.” – Sophocle

As temperatures start to rise in the great state of Texas, I have to start thinking about comfort. I love sundresses, but have spent the last few summers trying to get into the habit of wearing more shorts. Of course I still enjoy wearing heels so these distressed shorts (CitiTrends) and white shirt (NY&Co) were the perfect combination to dress up. I paired this exact outfit with this pair of  Merla heels from JustFab (see below). As always. this outfit was budget friendly and each piece allows for a number of other options. Let the moments of “fun in the sun” begin!

Denim on Denim

“Denim is a way of life.”

20170409_215538

Don’t we all love a nice pair of denim jeans? Whether it was Chic, Jordache, Guess,or Levi’s, we all grew up having a desire for the latest brand of  jeans. My personal favorite was Chic because they actually had various colors and you had the option of pockets or no pockets. The only thing that has changed in my adult years is the cost of my denim jeans. I snagged these nice form fitting jeans and the tee shirt at Just In in the Harwin Shopping District (click here for latest styles). I topped it off with this super cool jacket from (Amazon). And, I completed the look with these cute, comfortable and colorful babies from Shoe Hall in the Harwin Shopping District.

You’re Like a Dictionary…Blah, Blah, Blah. The Worst Pick Up Lines…

PhotoGrid_1489211880707

“Hey sexy lady, it was nice to know you. But I gotta move on.”

Recently, I was subjected to a direct message that read, “Good morning. You are so fu**ing sexy.” I was appalled and felt like the person (unknown to me) that sent it was crass. I couldn’t figure out if they thought I was would accept that statement as a compliment or if they were truly desperate and disrespectful. Since I didn’t know the sender, I simply blocked and deleted the message and reported the sender as having a spam account. Thankfully, Instagram sent me a message saying the account had been deleted.

In today’s society, I am learning these types of statements have become the norm. Many women have taken a liking to the idea of being sexy and no matter how the statement is delivered, if it has sexy or beautiful in it, it’s acceptable. After reading some of the recent comments and pick up lines on social media I think I would rather stick to the “old school players” approach. Some of the worse, but nonetheless my favorite pick up lines are listed below:

  1. I’m no photographer, but I can picture us together.
  2. Are you a parking ticket? Because you’ve got “FINE” written all over you.
  3. If I could rearrange the alphabet I would put “U” and “I” together.
  4. Can I borrow a kiss? I promise I’ll give it back.
  5. You look familiar. Oh, you’re the girl of my dreams.
  6. Can you give me directions to your heart?
  7. Do you have a map? Because I keep getting lost in your eyes.
  8. I lost my phone number. Can I have yours?
  9. If you were a booger, I’d pick you first.
  10. Baby, if you were words on a page, you’d be fine print.

As I sat typing these lines, I laughed so hard. These are some of the corniest statements I have ever heard. However, I’ll take them any day over what is now considered suitable in approaching women. I hope grown men understand that girls want attention, women want respect. We would rather laugh at your lines being stale than feel like we have been scorned. The way you approach a person will determine how that person will treat you. In the words of The Temptations, “Treat her like a lady.”

Polka Dots Please!

“I don’t think there is ever a wrong time for a polka dot” Marc Jacobs

I love the idea of polka dots. It’s one of the few prints/patterns I’ve worn in every phase of my life. I was able to score this blue and white polka dot skirt (direct link here). Although the shades of blue in my shoes (found here) didn’t not quite match, it still provided a nice blend to my ensemble. And of course, a crisp white blouse (here) will always gets the job done!

Dinner Dates and Pencil Skirts

resized_20170128_211648_11

My workload gives me the extreme pleasure of having to  walk around in flats, slacks, “teacher” sweaters and dresses with pockets that stay filled with EXPO markers, ink pens and candy wrappers. And all of those items are totally out of my comfort zone. So, when given a chance, I’m always looking for a reason to throw on my heels, pencil skirts and any other article of clothing that gives me a little pizzazz.

This past weekend, my husband and I decided to delight in dinner and desserts. This gave me an opening to put on my big girl clothes. I opted for this bodysuit (here) that had me tangled up for a few minutes and a pencil skirt (here) . The bodysuit definitely didn’t have the fit I was expecting but that made it even more appropriate to pair with the skirt. Because I didn’t feel like wearing stocking or tights, I chose a pair of booties. Something simple, yet chic and I was ready to go.

This look was great for our “adulting” experience. It was budget friendly, comfortable and stylish. Cheers!

Want to Get Away?

dscf5851_11

Happy New Year!

It’s been a minute since I’ve blogged and I’m excited to start posting again! There were many transitions that took place in my family’s lives at the beginning of the new school year and we spent a lot of time attempting to adjust. One exceptional thing that came during this period was me having an opportunity to get back to my favorite hobby, reading.

While most people have moved to e-readers, I still enjoy hard copies of books. Oftentimes this brings unwanted attention and conversations. When people see me reading, they often inquire about my favorite author or book. And while I don’t have a favorite, I do have a selection that’s considered my “go to reads” when nothing new sparks my interest.

The Coldest Winter Ever (Sister Souljah) – I purchased this book sophomore year in college and it took me two years to get beyond chapter one. Once past the first chapter, I finished the book in the course of a day. During this time in my life I thought I wanted a “rough neck”. I wanted to display a level of rebellion and would do it by finding me a “hood figure”. This book helped me come to the realization I was not equipped for thug love and should probably stick to the script that seemed to flow with the path that had been paved for me.

screenshot_2016-12-29-19-01-22_11

Will the Real Women Please Stand Up (Ella Patterson) – This was my first self-help book. I enjoyed the fact that Patterson talked about all things female, from personal hygiene to promiscuous behavior. This book contributed greatly to my growth as a young woman. Lots of knowledge on the female specimen and the reason I don’t walk around with chipped nail polish.

screenshot_2016-12-29-18-58-41_11

The Bridges of Madison County (Robert James Waller) – Although not a fan of romance novels, I do believe in fairy tale endings. This story allowed me to believe true love can always exist. It was refreshing to know Francesca found contentment and died knowing she was sincerely loved, even if that love was from a man other than her husband.

screenshot_2017-01-12-13-26-52_11

Milk and Honey (Rupi Kaur) – This is the only poetry book I have ever selected other than Edgar Allen Poe’s Book of Poems. In her short poems, Kaur talks about hurting and healing. How can you find so much solace in the midst of so much pain? She finds a way to bring comfort to every situation imaginable. I love the sassiness in the tone of some of her poems. My favorite is the poem is which she says, “It wasn’t you I was kissing. Don’t be mistaken. It was him on my mind, your lips were just convenient.”

screenshot_2016-12-29-19-02-13_11

Women Have All the Power, Too Bad They Don’t Know It (Michael J. Lockwood) – From the male perspective, Lockwood speaks about the power of influence women have in relationships and how to take control of their relationships. It’s quite funny because he talks about his boys being upset with him for telling all the secrets. More importantly, he gives insight on behaviors we as women don’t recognize we display and how often we play ourselves because we are oblivious to our actions.

These are just a few of the books I keep on the edge of the bookshelf. I think reading is necessary to clear the mind and it allows one to dream. Reading reminds us we are able to move beyond the confines we have put in place for ourselves. As Mason Cooley states, “Reading gives us some place to go when we have to stay where we are.”

Counting Down My Top Five Adventures of the Summer – #1 Touring Washington D.C.

“Then I realized adventures are the best way to learn.” – Author Unknown

Every summer my family takes a vacation, and we usually drive to our destination. I am learning to appreciate the long rides because it gives us the opportunity to create our own schedule allowing us to relish in the moment.

This year’s destination was Washington D.C. My son had been asking to go for three years; we finally agreed he was ready to take in all the sites with a greater appreciation of what was to come. After traveling three days, stopping in other states and visiting numerous sites, we made it to D.C.

Prior to arriving, we agreed on the sites to visit so each one was fulfilling, but of course I had my favorites. Among the many sites visited was The Washington Monument, The Air and Space Museum, The White House, The Smithsonian, Arlington National Cemetery/Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, The Lincoln Memorial, The Newseum, The World War II Memorial, and The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. In addition, we also had the chance to visit Georgetown University and Howard University.

One of the most gratifying experiences was going to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and witnessing the Changing of the Guard. While observing such an amazing event, we tried to determine the patterns of the tomb guards steps and turns. We were definitely fascinated at the footprints in the mat that indicated the stride of all the tomb guards’ steps were exactly same every time.

Although all sites were of high amazing, The Newseum was my most favorable place. Starting from the outside, the front page of a newspaper from every state was on display. Upon entering the Newseum, we were able to watch videos about 9/11, the evolution of the sports, and America’s Most Wanted. There is an entire room that houses newspapers that display the top three stories of every year beginning in 1959. There are pieces of the Berlin Wall, the remnants of a reporters car that had been bombed, and a section dedicated to terrorism on US soil.

As part of the Newseum tour, we had an opportunity to participate in an interactive display as a local news anchor on several pre-determined stories; I had the pleasure of reporting on The Cherry Blossom Festival. Outside, on the top floor, revealed a breath taking view of Washington D.C. and of course, more newspapers. After 4.5 hours in the Newseum, we still failed to watch all of the videos and cover one floor. But unfortunately, it was closing time and we had to go.

This trip was definitely one of the best. And to add icing to the cake, driving to D.C. allowed us to steer off the path and visit a few friends that have become family on our way home. It was truly a blessing to take this trip as we returned home with smiles and left others with smiles of their own.

Counting Down My Top Five Summer Adventures – #2 Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and Sixteenth Street Baptist Church

The motto in the Freeman family is “Education doesn’t get a break”, and we try our best to teach beyond the classroom walls. After having toured the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site in Atlanta and the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, it was only befitting that we visit the Civil Rights Institute in Birmingham. We also had an opportunity to visit Sixteenth Street Baptist Church which sits right across the street from the Civil Rights Institute.

On the day of arrival, we were later than expected and did not have an opportunity to tour the museum. The members of the church were having choir rehearsal, so we could not enter the church. While walking the outside premises of the church, a stranger stopped us and asked if he could speak to our son. We gave him permission to proceed as we stood near. The guy was definitely inebriated. Even in the midst of his drunken state, he was very articulate, knowledgeable and passionate about Birmingham’s role in the Civil Rights Movement. The information he shared was accurate and unbeknownst to us would guide us in understanding several things throughout the museum the following day.

On day two, we toured the museum and the church.  We were able to watch videos, view pictures and hear stories about the bombing of Sixteenth Street Baptist Church which took the lives of four young, black girls. While at the museum, we read letters written by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. while in jail. Additional parts of the tour included many accounts of segregation, The Freedom Riders exhibit, and an audio playing throughout part of the tour that kept repeating the word “nigger”.

Because we try to find humor in everything, our son joked about the items and articles that were available to us “back in the day” such as the old glass bottle soda machines. He asked questions like; “Did that soda machine even work?” or “What kind of stereo is that?”

Although these type of trips can be very disheartening because of some exhibits, we use these occasions to show our son why it is important to have his own account of history. It also helps him understand why it is important to do his very best in all endeavors and never let an opportunity to be great pass by.

Counting Down My Top Five Summer Adventures – #3 Rehoboth Beach

My family did a lot of riding this summer and whenever my husband gets behind the wheel he is bound to find some undisclosed location that makes our family and friends say, “Where did you go?” Driving a total of 3,514 miles, there was no way he was going to disappoint this year. He went above and beyond in leading us to Rehoboth Beach, a city along the Delaware Beaches that is small, quiet and family friendly.

Rehoboth Beach houses a beach, boardwalk, four outlet malls and the largest liquor store in Delaware. Our family visited the beach during the day and stayed out there enjoying the scenery even when it rained. During the evening, we walked the boardwalk and spent time playing basketball games and skee-ball. The Boardwalk also had popcorn that surpassed the deliciousness of any popcorn I’d ever had.  We did go to the outlet malls to shop at the conclusion of our visit and the pinnacle point of the trip was not having to pay sales tax on anything!

Moments like these are the ones I never forget. We spend so much time having to answer the questions, “Where is that place and how did you find it?”, “Why did you pick that place?” and “What did you do while you were there?” and that makes our mysterious getaways that more memorable.

Counting Down My Top Five Summer Adventures – #4 College/University Tours

While vacationing, one of the things we incorporate into our travel is campus tours. This year we visited several schools, and some were quite mind-blowing. We had an opportunity to visit Howard, Georgetown, University of North Carolina, Duke, University of Southern Mississippi, University of Tennessee, University of Alabama Birmingham and The University of Alabama. The campuses were contrasting but definitely offered their own appeal, and I found myself mesmerized with each of them for distinctive reasons.

The campus that left me the most enthralled  was The University of Alabama. One thing that always pulls me in is the beauty of a campus. Alabama was spacious and aesthetically pleasing. I was so in awe; I only took one picture because I didn’t want to miss any part of the campus.

University of North Carolina was my second favorite campus simply because I am a Tarheel fan, and I love, love, love Carolina blue. The university runs into downtown, so it can appear slightly cluttered. The positive side is you have access to many of the amenities near the campus. Of course we had to visit the Dean Smith Center, and we had the opportunity to watch the Lady Tarheels practice.

Duke was my third favorite, and it is a campus for tourists. We visited the gardens which provided a nice picnic area and had a developing garden to showcase. The chapel was also one of our stops; while it was quite elegant, it was also slightly spooky. The highlight of the campus for a family of athletes was none other than the visit to Coach K’s court. To walk into the gym and have the opportunity to stand on the floor of Coach K’s court, receive an autographed basketball, and have the chance to shoot around was the climax of the visit.

Again, each campus offered something different to enjoy for each of our family members. The other campuses had their own highlights, and I would definitely visit each of them again if I were in the area. It is my desire, and I will make the extra effort to visit my three favorites again.
