Designed Differently

DSCF3824_1_2_2[1]

When I first decided to blog, I tried to be real creative in coming up with a name. I wanted a catchy blog name that said I was a true fashionista. But, as I started thinking about what I wanted to blog about, I realized I am so much more than an occasional cute outfit. As I started thinking about who I am and who or what I often compare myself to, I immediately thought about Barbie.

I have often compared myself to Barbie.  Many people think it’s because of the superficial beauty that is determined by others. But, truthfully it has nothing to do with how she looks or even her fabulous wardrobe. My fascination with Barbie, or Mattel rather, has everything to do with the ability to see yourself for who you are and not compromise your worth for something temporary. Like Barbie, I desire to withstand the tests of time and still be able to stand firm in who I am. I want to fully understand, I don’t have to change anything because something new comes along in a better package and catches the attention of others. If you stay true to who you are, they will all come back, simply because you are genuine, and many people need that.

As a child, I asked for a Barbie every year for Christmas. It was my desire to have an extensive collection. My parents never understood why I asked for the same doll every year. The only difference from year to year was her outfit. They even tried to buy me the accessories collection, with the multiple outfits hoping that would solve THEIR Barbie dilemma, but to no avail. They bought me all the latest dolls, including the Cabbage Patch, Pretty Cut and Grow, and even the Strawberry Short Cake (was that the actual name?). It didn’t matter, I still wanted Barbie!!!

Years later, I am still a fan of Barbie. As an adult, I still collect dolls and I still desire the Barbie for the same reasons. None of the dolls mentioned above are on the shelves any longer, but Barbie is still standing. Mattel never did anything extra to keep Barbie on the shelves; they simply remained faithful to their brand and stood behind their product. They were forever comfortable in knowing a masterpiece had been created.

I, like Mattel, desire to be able to stand firm in my beliefs and who I am. I don’t desire to compete with anyone because I know that I am one of a kind. I know that with everything in my heart, I always strive for the best. And, when I have reached a level of excellence, I strive for something greater. The beauty in Barbie is being able to love yourself unconditionally just the way you are. Knowing that you were created for a unique purpose and daring to understand and accept that you are designed differently.

Always Ready For A Trip

DSCF3609_1[1]

Traveling is always an adventure for my family. Our goal is to visit all 50 states in addition to traveling to other countries. One of our biggest slips is being repeat offenders. We, sometimes, find ourselves in the same state because one party has been to the state already and now the other parties are wanting to experience all the state has to offer. Another reason we find ourselves in this predicament is because some states are too big and have too many cities we would like to visit to accomplish everything in one trip.

Budget determines a lot of where we go and what we do. We try to spend around the same amount every year regardless of where our final destination might be. Because we are in education, summer is the best time for us to travel. It is also the most expensive time of the year to  travel. With that in mind, we have found many ways to make the most of our vacations and not break the bank. What is it we do to make the most of our vacations you ask?

  1. Plan ahead. We plan a year in advance for every vacation. This allows us to have an idea of cost and any provisions we might need to make before the trip. (We have a Plan A, B, and C. This means we have multiple options based on cost.
  2. Make it a road trip if possible. In most cases, paying for gas is cheaper than the cost of one round trip plane ticket. This also allows us to cover multiple states in one trip.
  3. Pay with prepaid gas cards versus using cash. Most often, we save approximately $.10/gallon by using a prepaid gas card.
  4. Find free attractions/activities along the way. When traveling through the smaller states that have few attractions of interest, we stop, visit a few of the attractions and make it an overnight trip. We are then able to scratch that state off the list.
  5. Pack snacks for the trip. Purchasing snacks from the local grocery store or Family Dollar is far cheaper than the gas station snacks.
  6. Subscribe to rewards programs such as Marriott Rewards and Choice Hotels Rewards. We typically have a couple of free nights that we use on the way going to our destination and on the way home.
  7. Pay in advance for the hotel. Hotels will give a 10%-15% discount when parties pay in advance.
  8. Purchase tickets for attractions in advance. Most will give a discount if you purchase tickets at least 7 days in advance. If we are doing multiple attractions in the same city, we look for a bundle packet. This usually saves us money as well.
  9. Buy plane tickets in advance. The early bird gets the worm!
  10. Stay in hotels that provide breakfast.
  11. Travel when hotels are offering additional points. Points can be redeemed for free nights at later dates.

These money saving tips allow us to enjoy ourselves every summer. This also allows us opportunities to still enjoy our summer while we’re home because we don’t put ourselves in a financial bind. We are not penalized for having fun on our vacations!

Dewberry Farms

We made it! It took forever but, the weather finally cleared up in enough time for us to make it to Dewberry Farm for the final weekend. Because the weather had been so bad, they actually extended the farm opening another week, before closing for the fall season.

The farm was full of fun-filled activities for younger kids and our God-daughter took full advantage of many of the activities. She ran, jumped, climbed, slid, picked pumpkins, and even dropped a pumpkin on my head. She was all over the place with the biggest smile on her face. My son on the other hand, not so much. He was not entertained with the activities but he went along with the group. He did, however, hit our God-daughter with the tetherball in an attempt to play with her. That was his fun for the day. LOL!

The family, as a whole, enjoyed our Sunday Funday. We had an opportunity to spend the day together, free of T.V. and football. It was honestly a great day of family, fun and fellowship.

Truly Grateful

Approximately three months ago I started a “Journal of Thanksgiving”. I decided I would conclude everyday by thanking God for something out of the ordinary. The purpose of the journal was to truly understand how much I have to be appreciative of and to stop taking things for granted that are not due to me. The experience has been difficult because we have a tendency to overlook so many things that we are afforded from day to day. For example, we often thank God that we are of sound mind. But, how often do we thank Him that He didn’t allow our thoughts to stray? Do we thank Him that our ways and thoughts are not wicked? We thank Him for our limbs working properly. But, do we thank Him when we go a complete day free from any hurt, harm or danger? We are quick to notice a cut or a sprain but, we disregard not having those injuries at the end of the day. We are so grateful for food on the table and clothes on our back. But, how often do we overlook the fact that we probably have a ton of options for both?

The day I decided to start the journal was a result of something most would consider simple. I always start my day with devotion but, this day I was anxiously awaiting an email from a parent. Based on previous conversations with the parent, I was certain her email was going to be sharp and offensive. I started this particular day by checking my email first and to my surprise there was no email from her. I must admit, I breathed a huge sigh of relief. I moved into my devotion and upon completing it, I went back to my email. And there in my inbox was the dreaded email I was looking for. The horrific email  read, “Ms. Freeman, thank you so much for your response. I appreciate everything you have done to help me get my child started in school. All that you have provided for me has been very helpful and I am happy to say we are off to a great start. I really appreciate your thoughtfulness and consideration and I  hope you have a wonderful day”. Won’t He do it????!? I stopped and said another prayer and immediately called my husband to tell him of God’s greatness. And, though it probably meant nothing to many that work around me, it was everything for me at that moment.

During this season we have found a multitude of reasons to give thanks. We are truly gracious that God has accepted us with all of our flaws. We are very much aware that we are not deserving of many of our blessings. I have challenged my family to look beyond the obvious and reflect on how God keeps us daily. Will you join us and do the same?

“Thankfulness creates gratitude which generates contentment that causes peace.”  –  Todd Stocker

Baby Doll Dresses and Boots

20151122_135610_1_1[1]As the temperatures start to drop, I simply start making adjustments to my wardrobe by layering. During the cooler months, I add long sleeved shirts, cardigans and boots to the same pieces I wore in the summer and spring. This minimizes the amount of clothing I buy and it allows me to be very creative.

This baby doll dress I wore today could easily be paired with a tank and some sneakers for the summer. But, it was not tank top weather, so I opted for a basic long sleeved button down shirt and some boots. I also added a camel colored leather jacket because I needed something a little bit heavier than just a long sleeved shirt.

During my walk in the park today, the most amazing thing happened. I stumbled across a cross country meet! I have not been to a cross country meet in years so of course I had to hang around and watch the babies compete. I truly enjoy the simple things in life and watching those kids warm up in preparation for the meet was very fulfilling for me. They were super excited and I found myself entrapped in their eagerness and anticipation of what was to come. Of course, I took a few pictures of the runners as they quickly became the focus of my “Sunday Funday”!

Pink Out!

DSCF4027_1[1]This weekend I had the opportunity to celebrate a friend’s 50th birthday and five years of her being cancer free. When I received the invite, of course it read, “wear a shade of pink.” I immediately went to the closet and pulled out a pink v-neck sweater. It was really the only pink item I had that I found appropriate for the cooler weather. Mentally, I paired this pink sweater with so many different bottoms…black capris, black shorts, blue jeans, a green skirt, red jeans, etc. If I thought it could match, I was going to take a chance on it with the pink sweater.

The night of the event I opted for a black skirt to wear with the sweater. The skirt had never been one of my options until about three hours before the event started. Of course, since this was a last minute change I also put together “Plan B”. I started getting ready and had just finished my make-up when I decided I didn’t want to wear the pink sweater after all. Every decision that had been made about this outfit had been centered around this pink sweater and at the last minute I decided it was too simple for me. I went back to the closet and pulled out a mauve sweater vest, which is mixed in with my spring/summer pieces, and pulled out a long sleeve white shirt that I typically pair it with for work in the cooler  months. I decided to take a risk with this look. The clothes said preppy but the  boots I chose to wear said edgy. The boots were a bigger risk than the last minute outfit because everybody suggested I return them with the exception of one friend. Well, needless to say the outfit was a hit. We partied in our pink for a purpose and I was genuinely happy to be able to celebrate my friend!

Blue Magic

DSCF4003_1[1]

Blue jeans are absolutely one of the greatest inventions ever. They have become timeless pieces because you can make them a part of any dress code. Blue jeans, paired with a nice suit coat, have become the new khaki for business casual wear.

The best thing I discovered about 10 years ago was blue jeans with 2% spandex. I love my jeans to have a perfect fit but I want to be comfortable and that comfort came along with the 2% spandex. When searching for pants now, the first thing I look to see is if they have the spandex in them. If not, I typically walk away.

Denim on denim has been my favorite thing for about two years. Although, I don’t have two denim pieces that are an exact match I will still try and make it work. I love the denim on denim combination because it gives you lots of options with accessories. Today, I opted to add a vest to give it just a little more flavor. It’s really light and very relaxed. I almost felt like Linus feels about his blanket. I had a sense of security in this vest. AND MY SHOES, my shoes were shockingly very comfortable. I was in them for approximately six hours (walking) and never felt any discomfort. Nothing like a cute pair of heels that don’t hurt to make a girl’s day! Happy feet equate to happy days!

Don’t Rain On My Parade

DSCF3971_1[1]

The weather has been atrocious the past couple of weekends. We have dealt with severe thunderstorms, flooding and gloomy days. As a result of the rain, we have been confined to the house, lounging around and watching television. I’m sure this sounds great to most people, but we like to get outdoors on the weekend. So, after sitting in the house for another weekend, I decided I would not let the rain interfere with my “park day”. After church, I went out and took a slow stroll in my heels and in the mud.

This dress I wore for church was slightly different for me. If I had come across this dress about a year ago, I would have passed right over it because of the colors. However, when I saw it, I fell in love with the vintage look and the colors highlighted the look. The dress was on sale which is always a bonus for me. I planned to put purple accessories with it but once I put it on the purple seemed to fade in the background and I had to question if it was purple or black. This dress was super comfortable and very classic and I absolutely loved the look.

Pink With A Purpose

“I love the color pink. It makes a bold statement.” Samuel Larsen

DSCF3646[1]

Pink is absolutely one of my favorite colors. For a female, it says pretty, playful, prissy and perfect. For men, it says bold and proud. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and in recognition of those who are in the fight against breast cancer, we proudly display our pink throughout the month. Even the most macho of males will wear pink to celebrate and honor those that have battled breast cancer or those that are pressing forward in the midst of the challenge of dealing with breast cancer.

As we recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the warmer weather starts to come to an end, I decided to take one of my favorite pink shirts, and do a little color-blocking, before I put it away until spring rolls around again. I love pink because there’s so much you can do with it. You can pair pink with almost any color…purple, red, blue, yellow, green, gray and of course your basic blacks, browns and white. There are a few more days left in the month; don’t forget to wear your pink to acknowledge those that stand strong in the fight against breast cancer.

Crocodile Encounters

IMAG0027_1[1]

I am a huge fan of the outdoors but summers can get pretty spicy in Texas. With that in mind, I typically start the beginning of spring with a trip to the zoo. This year my son was not in favor of this zoo trip stating, “It’s too hot and it stinks!” So, instead of the zoo, I surprised the family with a Saturday morning outing to Crocodile Encounters. The visit allowed us to have an up close experience with alligators, crocodiles, turtles and llamas. We were able to see how aggressive crocodiles and alligators can become when they are hungry versus how meek they are when they are content. We watched them jump, yes jump, for food and it was quite entertaining to see them reach for their meal. The guide showed us the tactics that are used to settle them when they become aggressive. We also walked through the Turtle Farm and we were allowed to pet the turtles. One rub was enough for me and I was satisfied and ready to move on. (I don’t like dry, cracked skin on a human so rubbing that shell was a turn-off.) We also touched the baby alligators. I refused to touch the snakes but I did feed the llamas. The adventure was definitely different, something new and fun. And, our guide was absolutely amazing!
